In Love Alone

Of all the plights, of all the woes,
That cause a man to groan,
There is not one that’s sadder than
To be in love alone...

Love’s nature is, that it requires Its
love returned in kind;
If ocean deep and ocean wide,
Then oceans it must find...

If love has risen to the height Of stars
in distant skies,
Then love desires they twinkle back
Within a lover’s eyes...

And thus, when arms have none to hold,
When lips have none to kiss,
The heart is space without its stars,
The emptiest abyss...

But when I think what God has done,
And that His love is best,
I wonder of my love for Him,
And if it stands the test...

For there are plights, and many woes,
That cause our God to groan.
But there’s not one that’s sadder than
When He’s in love alone...
