ABOUT MALTA

Malta is a small state situated in the Southern Europe near the southern coast of Italy.The state has a rich and turbulent history..The first settlements on the island date back from 10000 B.C.The settlers probably came from Asia Minor.

The period from the 4100-2000 B.C ,when new settlers came from the Western Mediterranean is renown for the architectural monuments which were erected at that time on the island.These are megalithic buildings and temples which are still well-preserved.Suddenly these mysterious inhabitants which built them disappeared,which is the major mystery to be solved by the modern day scientists.a 1000 years afterwards the island becomes a safe heaven for thе Carthagenians and Phynecians-the so called 'malta' which means refuge.

By that way the island received the name under which it is well-known today.The next years are characterized with the swift change of rulers and empires which governed the island-arabs,normans etc.In 1814 Malta becomes British colony.The English language becomes official in 1934 alongside with Maltese and Italian.In 1964 Malta becomes an independant state and in 1974 is proclaimed as a republic.From 2004 it is a member of the European union.

As a tourist destination malta is attractive during the summer and fall.The main sightseeing objects are the Ggantija temples from the neolithic age.In the capital La Valleta you can visit buildings from the Rennaisance which were erected by maltese and european builders.the climate in Malta is mild.In the winter the temperarure is arely above 14 degrees.
