For some reason, it seems to me that many Muslims, although strict about what they eat, and wear, do not seem keep their homes quite as clean as Anglo Indians, Indians...
I live in a building, part of a complex, where many Muslims live alongside Chinese, European and British people, and black people mostly from the West Indies...and many are so dirty that others living around them have to treat their own apartments for bugs so they don't move to their place also. (Chinese are also quite dirty, more so actually than Muslims)
It's really a big problem as the building is getting run down, and soon all the non-Muslims & non-Chinese may have to find another place to live! Very few Hindustani folks live in this community, though the markets all stock the same food as in neighbourhoods close-by where more Indians live!
I just moved into this building last July, and really what I'd heard about many Muslims not being clean is true. But their homes are very neat, just kitchens and bathrooms not as clean. They don't know how to store food so the bugs don't get attracted... They don't even take notice of the bugs! Arggh!
The other difference is they are not quite as nice and helpful. They tend to push ahead of others, even if you let them in the door of the building for which they do not have a key, and not even say thank you, then slam the door in your face so you have to open it again. To have that happen in your building once a week is really awful. Most of the Muslims here are from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Some of the ladies are very nice, but the men are extremely disrespectful to women, not even acknowledging them.
The man down at the end of the hall was awful for a year, but now he is nice since I have become friendly with his wife and son and daughter. Now he will smile and say hello. Part of it is in the religion, the other is in the culture within the religion.
I guess they never heard, when in Rome, do as the Romans do! But, we can be nice to those that are worth teaching and be friends with them. That's the only way it will ever change. It's really just all they know.
Many of them are stressed, not used to living in Canada where they have to do everything for themselves without servants...
